Prof. Stefano Zaffagnini is the head of the 2nd Orthopaedic and Traumatology Unit and the co-ordinator of the “Sports Traumatology Excellence Center” at the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli, in Bologna, Italy. He is Full Professor in Orthopaedics and Traumatology at University of Bologna.
He received his medical degree and completed specialisation in Orthopaedic surgery and traumatology at the University of Bologna. He performed a six-month fellowship in sports medicine and orthopaedic research at the University of Pittsburgh (USA), under the direction of Prof. Fu and Prof. Woo, and he was ESSKA-AOSSM travelling fellow in the USA.
Prof. Zaffagnini’s main clinical and scientific interests are: sports traumatology, arthroscopic and replacement surgery of the knee, shoulder and hip joints, biomechanics and computer assisted surgery.
Since August 2009, he is a member of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Study Group. He is currently involved in several national and international scientific research projects.
He was a member of ESSKA’s Cartilage Committee and an associate editor of the KSSTA journal. He was the chairman of ESSKA’s Athroscopy Committee from 2008 to 2010, and he was Scientific Chairman of the 15th and 16th ESSKA Congress.
Prof. Zaffagnini is a member of ISAKOS’ scientific committee and he was Programme Chair of the 12th biennial ISAKOS congress in 2019 in Cancun, Mexico.
Since 2019, he is the Editor-in-Chief of JEO.
