Dr Miguel A. Ruiz Ibán is currently the Head of the Shoulder and Elbow Unit in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology in Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal, in Madrid, Spain.
He received his medical degree in Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and completed the Orthopedic Surgery Residency Programme at the Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal. He completed his PhD, focused in the biomechanics of the lower lumbar spine and pelvis, at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Clinical Management of Specialist Care Units at the European Institute of Health and Social Wellbeing. He is an active ESSKA member since 2010.
His current research interests include both basic and clinical research in two main topics: shoulder surgery and musculoskeletal pain management. His shoulder research currently focuses on epidemiology and outcomes of shoulder instability surgery and rotator cuff disease. He has also extensive research background in stem cell therapies, meniscal repair and regeneration, growth factor expression and effects in the healing tissue, knee and hip injuries in the young population and tromboprofilaxis in the orthopedic and trauma patient.
He has also taken part in many randomized controlled trials as principal investigator and has been the recipient of different research grants by private and public institutions.
Dr Ruiz Ibán has lectured extensively at national and international meetings. He has authored numerous books, chapters and abstracts. He has published more than 50 papers in indexed, international peer reviewed journals, including Arthroscopy, American Journal of Sports Medicine, KSSTA, Clinical Drug Investigation, Orthopedics and others. He currently serves on the editorial board of KSSTA and World Journal of Orthopedics; he also regularly reviews for many other journals.
